How to build a playbook from your existing documents

Last updated:

Short answer

Open Playbooks, choose New playbook, and either upload your existing playbook file, derive one from 3 to 10 signed contracts of the same kind, or write it from scratch. Attorly drafts position ladders (preferred, fallback, unacceptable), required clauses and red flags, and nothing is saved until you have reviewed it.

Steps

  1. Start a new playbook

Go to Library, then Playbooks, then New playbook. Choose the contract type and, if it applies, a jurisdiction.

  2. Choose how to start

Upload a DOCX, DOC, PDF, XLSX, XLS or TXT file of up to 10 MB with your standard positions; or pick 3 to 10 analysed contracts your firm negotiated, so Attorly can find the positions you consistently obtained and where you gave ground; or start from a blank page.

  3. Review the draft

Each term becomes a ladder: the preferred position, an acceptable fallback and what is unacceptable, with a rationale. Add required clauses the contract must contain and red flags that must trigger review. Set whose paper the playbook applies to.

  4. Save and share

Accept the draft to save it. Keep it personal or share it with your organization, and pick it in the redline panel or the Word add-in.

Good to know

  • Custom playbooks need Pro or Enterprise.
  • The uploaded file is stored encrypted. Discarded or failed imports are deleted 30 days after their last change.
  • Term ids stay stable when you rename a term, so earlier grades keep pointing at the right term.

Frequently asked questions

Our playbook is a spreadsheet. Does that work?
Yes. XLSX and XLS files are read row by row, alongside Word, PDF and text files.
Can I edit a playbook after saving it?
Yes. Terms, ladders, required clauses and red flags can be edited at any time.
